  • 1984 – After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India on 31 October 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards, anti-Sikh riots erupt.

  • 2007 – S. Ali Raza, Indian director and screenwriter (b. 1922)
  • 1950 - Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, one of the best exponents of modern Bengali literature. His best-known work is the autobiographical novel, Pather Panchali.
  • 1873 - Dinabandhu Mitra, noted Bengali author. His book 'Nil Darpan' portrayed the suffering of farmers in Bangla who were forced into indigo cultivation.
