Based on the "Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development" (OECD) data, Canada is the most educated country globally, with 56.71% of adults meeting the OECD criteria.

While by the year 1820 only 12% of the population was able to read and write, this data now have almost reversed and by 2016 around 86% of the world's population is literate, who can read and write(15 years and above).
For the last 65 years, the literacy rate of the world population has increased at the rate of 4% for every 5 years. By 1942 we had only 42% literate while by 2016 we have 86% literate population in the world.
While Uzbekistan is the country with the highest literacy rate as of 2018, with over 99.99% of its population able to read and write. Males ages 15 and above are reported to have a 100% literacy rate, while adult females have a 99.99% literacy rate.
India spent around 3.1% of its GDP on education in 2019-20, as per the Economic Survey. An increase in spending and an enhanced education policy at a national level will surely help India in improving the quality of education it provides.
According to Census 2011, Kerala has the highest total literacy rate and female literacy rate whereas Lakshadweep had the highest male literacy rate. Andhra Pradesh has the lowest overall literacy rate.
Due to Illiteracy, the world has to suffer a loss of around $1.19 trillion every year, which can be reduced, if we keep focusing on educating our new and the old generations.
