Siddaramaiah: The Man Who Transformed Karnataka

Siddaramaiah is a man of many firsts. He was the first Chief Minister of Karnataka to serve a full five-year term in 40 years, and the second in the history of the southern state after Devaraj Urs. He is also the first graduate of his village, and the first person from his community to become Chief Minister.

Siddaramaiah was born into a farming family in Siddaramanahundi, a village around 20 kilometres from Mysore. As a young boy, he was more interested in his father's cattle and fields than in education. However, his father encouraged him to pursue education, and Siddaramaiah eventually went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Mysore University and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Karnataka State Law University.

After completing his law education, Siddaramaiah worked as a junior under a lawyer in Mysore. He also taught part-time at a local law college. In 1978, he was elected to the Mysore Taluka Board, and he later served as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 2004. In 2004, he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, and he served in that position until 2007.

In 2013, Siddaramaiah was elected Chief Minister of Karnataka. During his five-year tenure, he oversaw a number of major development projects, including the construction of Asia's largest drip irrigation facility, the implementation of artificial rain cloud seeding, and the setting up of the world's largest solar park. He also launched a number of social welfare schemes, such as the Anna Bhagya Scheme (which provides subsidized rice to all households below the poverty line), the Ksheera Bhagya Scheme (which provides free milk to children below the age of six), and the Indira Canteens (which provide subsidized meals to the poor).
