Legendary athlete Milkha Singh on 12th January 2015(Sunday) said hockey wizard Dhyan Chand should have been the first sportspersons to be conferred with the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna.
The 'Flying Sikh' though felt that bestowing the honour on cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has opened the door for the other Indian sportspersons. "It was good that it was given to Sachin. It has opened the door for sportspersons. But the first to get it should have been Dhyan Chand."
This is not the first time that Milkha has demanded the Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand.
In December last year, Milkha had said that Dhyan Chand, who powered India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936, too deserved the honour.
Major Dhyan Chand is that Indian Hockey Player, whose birthday 29th august is observed as the National sports day in India. There are also other different awards in sports that are conferred to the players who showed exceptional talents in the field of sports. Awards like Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna award and Dronaharya award given by the President of India at the Rashtrapati bhavan is on this same day 29th August.

Major Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad, united province, British India in the year 1905. Now he is again on News for the "Bharat Ratna" award. As Govt. Of India has decided to give Bharat Ratna to the people who showed exceptional talents and represented India high in their field and added sports category after a long discussion. Now Bharat Ratna can be given to all the field’s talents.

Now the debate is who should be given the Bharat Ratna award first? Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar or Major Dhyanchand?

Dhyan Chand was in the team when India had won the Gold medal in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, 1932 Los Angeles Olympic and 1936 Berlin Olympics. In the 1928’s Amsterdam Olympic Dhyanchand had scored 14 goals in 5 matches, to which a newspaper of that time quoted him as “This is not the game of Hockey, but magic. Dhyan Chand is in fact the magician of Hockey.”
In 1932’s Los Angeles Olympic India had played in all 37 matches, winning 34 drawing 2, with one abandoned. And Dhyan Chand alone had scored 133 goals out of the total 338 goals by Indian side. Dhyan Chand used to play center forward in his team.

In 1936’s Berlin summer Olympic India defeated germany 8-1, incidentally the only goal scored against India and Dhyan chand was again the top score with 3 goals.
Overall in three Olympic tournaments Dhyan chand had scored 33 goals in 12 matches.

In the year 1956 at the age Dhyan Chand retired as a major in army and in the same year he was conferred padma Bhushan. Dhyan Chand is the only hockey player in India to receive this award till date.
Dhyan Chand died on December 3, 1979 in his hometown Jhansi and he was cremated with full military honors by his regiment, Punjab regiment.

Even today he is remembered ad the legendary in Indian and world hockey. He is always been remembered for his magical dribbling of hockey ball. His dribbling was always accolade as the magical dribbling and many newspapers and journals used to start writing on him with his dribbling act. Don Bradman when had met him in year 1935 had said that he goals like we score runs in cricket.
  • Once when Dhyan Chand was making goal but on repeated trials he used to miss the goal, he argued the referee about the measurement of Goal post and amazingly, the goal post after measurement was found not to be in conformation with the International standard.
  • In berlin, Germany banners and poster like “Visit the Hockey stadium to watch the Indian Magician Dhyan Chand in action” was prevalent due to his magical stickwork.
  • Once a lady from the crowd gave him, her own walking stick and Dhyan Chand also scored Goal with that stick.
  • In Holland the authorities of Hockey tournament to check for the magnet inside the stick broke his hockey stick.
  •  Residents of Vienna, Austria set a statue of him with four hands and four sticks to depict his control and mastery over the ball.
Updated: I wish this years sports ministry's nomination for  Bharat Ratna Dhyan Chand be given the "Bharat Ratna" award.
